Success at the Thessaloniki International Doc Market

April 16th, 2007 by FFW WorldPulse Festival Newswire - Documentary - Television

Running alongside the Film Festival, the International Doc Market made 257 films available to industry professionals from 23 countries.

Festival Founder, Director and co-Programmer, Dimitri Eipides state that "25% of the films in the last year's market sold. This exposure is vital for documentary filmmakers. They need their work to be circulated and seen more than anyone."

About the market: The creation and operation of the Thessaloniki International Doc Market was an initiative of the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival - Images of the 21st Century and was an innovation in the field of Greek film festivals. The main purpose of the Market, annually co-organized with ERT A.E., is to bolster the commercial potential of contemporary documentaries presenting a rich, representative and eclectic sample of the year's international documentary production and giving the opportunity to Greek and foreign directors to promote their work by coming in contact with the right people. The Market took its first steps as a Balkan market, however its quality didn't take long to attract buyers from all of Europe and to transform it into a European market within its first five years of operation. In the last few years the Market has become international, with major television networks, distributors, even representatives of other Festivals from all over the world participating. The constantly increasing attendance of the buyers and their great interest in its programme, has already established its place among international markets. At the same time as its success, the Market has accomplished yet another of its particular ambitions, the promotion and support of Greek documentaries, as it now annually presents almost the sum total of Greek production, independent and non independent, and gives a unique opportunity to Greek documentary makers to not only come in contact with their foreign colleagues and to learn about all the new trends in contemporary documentary film making, but even more importantly to present their work to industry professionals and so be able to promote it internationally and find practical help that will permit them to continue with their vision.

LISTEN TO ME – the young people got something to say

April 12th, 2007 by FFW WorldPulse Festival Newswire - Children

The socially conscious Videotivoli festival continued its dedication to youth education and media this year. During the festival run, Videotivoli arranged a free two-day seminar at the University of Tampere for those interested in social issues and media education; teachers, and people working with children and young people.

The seminar examined social issues and the influence of the media from the point of view of children and young people. The speakers shed light on this question (for example) by different film projects. Through making films, young people can handle and deal with sensitive matters in their lives, and at the same time they can have someone hear their voice. The seminar also dealt with the co-existence of Finns and immigrants and life in the developing countries.

The Thursday March 8th program consisted of four professionals from the film and educational fields who spoke on various aspects of youth and media. Angelo Loy Director of the African Medical & Research Foundation lead a segment titled “How to get young people to video camera about their life experiences.” Samuel Raunio, assistant at the University of Jyväskylä, spoke about young people’s view of the developing countries. Antti Pelttari, lecturer on cultural enterprise, hosted a segment called, “Learning media skills in everyday school life.” Jean Bitar, Director of Bitar Films gave a talk on Young peoples’ experiences of making the “Säpinää Hakunilassa” document film

The following day continued its program, starting with American producer and director, Austin Haerbele (Listen up!) who spoke about "The experiences of one, voice of many: personal storytelling." Chris Shuepp (media pedagogue, Magic-project coordinator, Unicef, Germany) conducted his portion of the seminar with “How to become a critical consumer of media." Director of Jack Drum Arts, Helen Ward & Director of Daisy Arts, Jane Crawford took on a very important and sensitive issue with their seminar segment, “ Invisible Lives, Strong Voices - How media can empower young people who have experienced sexual exploitation and child abuse.”

The following Panel discussion , lead by Chairman: Reijo Kupiainen, included Maikki Kantola (mediapedagog), Sirkku Kotilainen (Senior researcher University of Jyväskylä, Chair of Finnish Society on Media Education), Minna Lindroos (producer, YLE), Linda Haapanen (student)
